White Rabbit Red Rabbit

What happens when no one knows what comes next?

The internationally celebrated theatrical experiment White Rabbit Red Rabbit by Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour returns to London for its 15th anniversary. This special run features an exciting lineup of acclaimed performers, including David Tennant, Riz Ahmed, and Kathryn Hunter, with more names yet to be announced.

Since its 2011 premiere, the play has been translated into over 30 languages and performed more than 3,000 times by some of the most respected figures in theatre and film. Fifteen years later, its themes remain as powerful and relevant as ever. Each performance invites a new actor to step on stage and encounter the script for the very first time—live, in front of an audience.

Every show begins with a sealed envelope containing a script the performer has never seen. With no rehearsal and no director, the actor must bring the text to life in the moment. What unfolds is shaped entirely by their response to the playwright's words, making each performance unpredictable and entirely unique.

Written at a time when Soleimanpour was unable to leave his country, the play captures the voice of a generation in a form that is both inventive and deeply personal. By turns playful, moving, and unsettling, White Rabbit Red Rabbit explores themes of obedience, choice, and freedom of expression.

The result is a work that resonates far beyond its origins—examining power, complicity, and the delicate relationship between performer and audience anywhere in the world.

A different performer takes the stage each night, ensuring that no two performances are ever the same. While every effort is made to present the advertised artists, and changes are rare, casting may occasionally vary. Please note that refunds or exchanges cannot be offered in the event of a performer change. If a performance is cancelled entirely, a full refund will be provided.

Was it an interesting social/acting experiment or political commentary?
Fascinating - glad I went but not sure if a) the material was strong enough and b) whether the descent into pure comedy was the desired effect. Would love to see how other actors presented it. But that's just it …it’s personal interpretation and the writer has handed it over. A lot of ad lib with Mel G even when ‘the story’ got going. She is brilliant at holding an audience and her quick thinking brain was evident in her jokes but we did go round the houses and she was evidently uncomfortable with a couple of the ‘old fashioned comments’. What about giving it to unknown actors/amdram. Famous actors maybe feel the need to do something with it. Love the concept. Brave and great to experience something different. No music/costumes. One set lighting and a couple of things on stage for the actors/audience to use.
